Conversations In The Streets

Dear Ms. Lunelle,

While there are not very many people in the streets these days, I would be asked by one of my black babies (that I had given a copy of the Honorable Mike Scruggs' book, "The Un-Civil War") as I stood on the overpass with the Southern Cross, a very thought provoking question ...... and, I might add, that I was so impressed that she asked me first if she was six feet away from me?

Her question.... "Mr. HK, because of you, I have read a lot about General Robert E. Lee, and General Thomas (Stonewall) Jackson. And, I am now reading Mr. Scruggs' book as well. Mr. HK, I know that I can't predict who will make it to heaven, and who will not, but after reading, and watching the actions of Rev. Al Sharpton, Rev. Jesse Jackson, the late Julian Bond, and how they treat the memory of these two Confederate generals who, in my opinion, I believe, will be in heaven, if they, too, make it there, what would they say to these two dear men?"

I felt so inadequate to answer this baby girl. And, I thought so very hard as she waited patiently for me to answer for what seemed like an eternity.

"Baby girl," I said, "I don't know."

I know what I wanted to say, but I remembered a passage in the Bible that said, "if you make it to heaven, there may not be someone who you thought would be there, and there may be someone there who you didn't think would be."

And, I don't think that Jackson, Sharpton, or Bond will be, but I didn't have the heart to tell her that. And, my dad, the Honorable Rev. Roland Rogers Edgerton, told all his children, "judge not and be judged also."

She gave me an air hug, and said that she would pray for me and my works. God bless you!

Your brother,

HK
