Mr. H.K. Edgerton

1.  What is your main reason for being against affirmative action?

2.  Do you think it is effective in any way?

3.  In your opinion is it important that Universities and work places be diverse, and why is it so compelling to the government?

4.  Some minorities are against affirmative action because they believe it makes their degree mean less. Do you believe that many minorities have this view?

5.  Is there any other way to create a more diverse population in universities and workplaces other than affirmative action?

6.  Do you believe that race should be considered at all or should everything be race-blind?

7.  What experiences have you had that are related to affirmative action?

8.  Why do you think affirmative action continued even after Regents of the University of California v. Bakke (1978) when it was determined that it violated the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment?

9.  If the Hopwood v. Texas case once again determined that affirmative action violates the Fourteenth Amendment, why are more states not dropping their affirmative action programs?

10.  Chief Justice Roberts stated, “the way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discrimination on the basis of race”, do you agree? And do you think this is the reason to abolish affirmative action?

11.  Many people believe that affirmative action could be considered reverse discrimination, do you agree? Why or why not?

12.  I have read in some article that even though some states in the west stopped affirmative action they still give Native Americans a better chance of college acceptance, do you believe that is fair?

13.  Personally I believe that affirmative action is wrong because the only thing that should be the determinate of college acceptance is intelligence. Do you feel like this is a good reason, or should there be more to my reasoning?

14.  I have read that you were once the president of the NAACP in Asheville, did you deal with anything related to affirmative action during this time?

15.  Also, if you do not mind me asking, why are you no longer the president?

16.  Do you have any additional comments about affirmative action, or your beliefs about it?

(If you have any problems understanding what i am trying to ask feel free to call. I am free anytime except Tuesdays and Thursdays when I have class from 8:00A.M. until 4:30P.M.)

I would like to thank you so very much for doing this for me. Before I wrote out these questions I researched you (that is why I sent this email so late), and you are a very interesting person. You seem like you are a great man with much wisdom, and it was an honor to talk with you. I would love to learn more about you so if you have anything you would like to tell me I would love to hear it. I am very grateful that you would help me out with this, and if there is anything I can do in return I would be more than happy to.

Thank you,

Annette (Annie) Stevens
