Mr. Edgerton,

I assure you of my respect for you and your cause and your defense of the Texan cause that you were so effective in bringing attention to. I also value your knowledge of the issues and history of southern blacks in the Confederacy. If it weren’t for my interest in the 37th Texas Cavalry as a Texas Confederate unit, you would be first on my list of speakers on this subject. I feel it is important to tie this event strongly to Texas history and that is my purpose in seeking someone from the 37th. The gentleman Representing the Union side has an ancestor that on one hand, served in units that enforced reconstruction and served the evil Governor Davis as he tried to defy the will of Texas voters and remain in power. Then on the other hand, as Buffalo Soldiers , these black soldiers were courageously critical to the defeat of hostile Indian forces threatening the lives and property of those same Texans and in opening West Texas to settlement. I need to show that Black Texans were as important to the history of Texas as their counterparts in the Union Army. I assure you that I will keep you in mind if I am unable to secure a speaker from the 37th and if any other suitable occasions come along, you will be first on my mind. I don’t know what issues others may have with you, but they are not my issues. I remember our visit with you in Navasota quite fondly and look forward to my next opportunity to visit with you.

Respectfully,
