As usual, an excellent post by Bernhard Thuersam--this time on the poor treatment that free blacks routinely received in the North (in this case, in Rhode Island). There have been several books written on the pitiful condition of Northern free blacks.
When one knows the facts about the North's treatment of its free blacks, one is able to see the Civil War in a new light, and to see through the smoke screens that Northern apologists created, and that most historians usually repeat, in order to conceal the true nature of the war.
I have a long section on Northern racism and the awful condition of Northern free blacks in my recently revised and expanded article "The Southern Side of the Civil War." In fact, I expanded that section more than any other. Here's a link to the article:
